Computational intelligence (CI) represents a collection or set of computational techniques in soft computing, machine learning, and some engineering disciplines which investigate, simulate, and analyze very complex issues and phenomena, closely related with evolutionary intelligence. CI provides us with the opportunity to use our knowledge and raw data to approach extremely complex problems. Nowadays, in the combination of mathematical/computational models, data science, optimization and algorithms, CI have become one of the most rapidly developing areas with varied applications in both science and society.

Nowadays, CI techniques in big data are a hot research topic among academics and the industry community. Big data refers to a collection of data sets that are too large or too complex for efficient processing and analysis using traditional database management tools. The applications of CI in big data will enhance decision making, insight discovery, and the process of optimization. However, there are still numerous technical challenges and issues that need to be improved and broadly explored.

This Special Issue aims at the dissemination of the most recent advances on the techniques in CI domain, such as evolutionary algorithms, swarm intelligence, artificial neural networks, and so on, and their applications in the context of big data. The potential topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
